ENGINE BALANCING: Balancing the reciprocating assembly (crankshaft, rods, pistons, pins, rings) on any engine is a critical step that should not be overlooked. You have probably driven a car or truck that has a wheel out of balance. You have felt what a few ounces of weight can do the the handling of your whole vehicle, you can feel the vibration all the way into the steering wheel. Now imagine what happens to your bearings and the overall engine longevity if your engine is not balanced properly. Other important considerations when balancing an engine are the type of balance your engine uses. Many engines today have a zero imbalance meaning no weight is bolted to the harmonic balancer or flywheel to balance the final assembly. Many older engines use different amounts of weight to achieve balance. Ford small blocks for example have used both 28oz and 50oz imbalance over the years. Mixing and matching parts can often result in an engine that is not balanced properly. It is therefore critical that you have all your final components that will be used when you balance the engine. Sometimes an engine that was designed for an external balance can be converted to an internal balance by lightening the crank weights and/or welding in a heavy metal (Mallory).
